KUCHING: Hudud law will not see its day in Sarawak because there will not be enough support in the 71-seat State Legislative Assembly for it to be passed.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said for a Bill to be passed, it needed a two-thirds majority in the august House.
“How can we implement it when all laws (for Sarawak) must be passed by the State Legislative Assembly with a two-thirds majority, and Muslim YBs only (make up) 25 per cent?”
Speaking to reporters after officiating at SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman Excellent Students’ Award presentation here yesterday, Daud lamented that state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen and his PKR counterpart Baru Bian had twisted his recent statement on hudud for political mileage.
“As I explained earlier, the hudud law was suggested by PAS Kelantan to be implemented in that state, not in Malaysia or Sarawak.”
Recently, Baru, who is also a lawyer, said Sarawak was under no obligation to follow the federal government’s decision on hudud law as the state’s rights on such matters were clearly enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement.
Daud said the opposition should not criticise the Barisan Nasional government on this matter because it was PAS, a member of Pakatan Rakyat, who brought it up in the first place.
“Why should they blame BN? They should blame PAS. If they are sincere, disagree with PAS. They (PAS) should get out of PR.
“This issue is a Kelantan issue. I don’t know why other people get excited about it…whole of Malaysia. (After all, it is) Kelantan only (sic).”
On the Islamic Information Centre, Daud said it was formed years ago to explain the salient features of Islam to non-Muslims, and not to convert them.
On another matter, Daud, who is also Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development, lauded SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman’s willingness to accept orphans from Komplex Laila Taib. The orphans started going to the school two years ago.
He said orphans from the centre were sent to SK Gita 2 and SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman.
At the function, Daud, who is also Tupong assemblyman, presented incentives to students who achieved excellence in the PMR and SPM examinations. There were also Special, Co-curriculum and Model Student awards.
Nuraina Farra Eriani Saibee scored the best SPM result with 10A’s while Ahmad Adzhar Mohd Khairulzaim went home with the Model Student award.
The principal Rakayah Madon and Parent-Teachers Association chairman Abdul Rahman Mohd Khairulzam Abdullah were also present at the function.
