KOTA KINABALU: Flight stewardess Maylesthelyn Ley Matius won the Klang Valley Unduk Ngadau competition.

The 24-year-old from Menggatal will vie for the coveted Sabah state-level Unduk Ngadau title at the closing of the Pesta Kaamatan to be held on May 30 and 31.

Taking the second and third spots were 21 year-old student Shelleni Madawal from Kota Belud and Cassandra Devi Jeremiah, 21, a student from Penampang, respectively.

About 2,000 Sabahans who live, work and study in the Klang Valley along with friends from the peninsula, joined in the festivities during the Kaamatan Festival organised by KDCA Klang Valley in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

The event was graced by Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili who is also KDCA Klang Valley patron.

“The festival, which has been held annually in the Klang Valley since 1996, should be continued to provide an avenue for Sabahans in the Klang Valley to get together with their families and friends. By celebrating the Harvest Festival away from home they would be able to practise, preserve as well as spread among the younger generation their culture, heritage and tradition.

“It is also a good way to showcase the cultures and traditions of the Kadazandusun and Murut communities among those in the peninsula,” said Dr Maximus.

He added that Sabahans had contributed a lot to nation building in their participation in the workforce, business, administration and unity programmes. Sabahans will continue to contribute to 1Malaysia as long as they preserve their unity and treasure their heritage,” added the Parti Bersatu Sabah deputy president.

Also present at the event were Sabah Assistant Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs Anita Baranting, Parti Bersatu Sabah deputy president Senator Datuk Jamilah Sulaiman and KDCA Klang Valley chairman Datuk Richard Bainon.
