KUALA LUMPUR: Civil servants have a better understanding of the rationale and importance of implementing the Goods and Service Tax (GST), said Cuepacs president Azih Muda.
Azih said the understanding was due to programmes organised by Cuepacs since last year to brief civil servants.
“So far Cuepacs had carried out programmes to brief the need for GST in a number of states, especially Kedah, Sarawak, Terengganu and Kelantan. We will carry out similar programmes in other states,” he told
Bernama when contacted yesterday.
He said at the initial stages, there was confusion for fear that the implementation of GST would see prices of essential goods increasing and lack of clear information as well as unreliable reports on the social media.
“However, through various programmes carried out to brief the people of its importance and relevance, many have a better understanding now,” he said.
The government will implement the Goods and Services Tax (GST), effective April 1, 2015 at a fixed rate of six per cent to replace the Sales and Services Tax at 16 per cent.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had said the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was a progressive tax system and its introduction was not meant to burden the people. — Bernama
