KUCHING: Five of the more than 90 overtaking lanes planned for the Pan Borneo Road have commenced in construction this year, said Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) director Zuraimi Sabki.

He told reporters here on Sunday that these overtaking lanes, which were approved by the federal government, are being implemented under the 10th Malaysian Plan (10MP).

He explained that these lanes are one kilometre to two kilometres long and about three metres to four metres wide.

“These include Jalan Pais, Betong, the Sibu-Selangau area, and so on and will be completed in stages by end of this year or next year.

“The allocation given by the government was RM40 million, while what was estimated before was RM400 million,” he said when met during the GoBald fundraising campaign organised by
Sarawak Children Cancer Society (SCCS) at CityOne Megamall yesterday.

He also mentioned that JKR is also currently upgrading and repairing roads along the Pan Borneo. “We are upgrading certain parts, like cracks at steep areas, or damage caused by landslides,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zuraimi joined 10 other JKR personnel under the Kelab Sukan Raya of the department to shave their heads in support of the GoBald campaign.

They also donated RM20,000 to the SCCS for the fund raising.
