MIRI: Youths should be briefed on the objectives of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which has already benefited 165 countries.
Sibuti Member of Parliament Ahmad Lai Bujang said this would help youths to understand the benefits and effects of GST so they are not easily influenced by objections raised by the opposition.
“Actually the GST rate of 6 per cent is not a burden according to economic experts after the successful implementation of such GST systems in 165 countries,” he said when contacted yesterday.
“The government does not see the GST’s implementation as burdening the people as it will boost the nation’s economy.”
He said GST, which will come into effect on April 1 next year, is much lower than the current sales and service tax (SST) of 16 per cent.
“The government always gives explanations to the people from time to time to ensure the younger generation will not be easily influenced by untruths,” he stressed.
According to him, youths who participated in a street protest against GST lacked understanding on the issue.
“That is why we want the youth to clearly understand the benefits of GST’s implementation,” he said.
