Challenge to Sukma athletes to obtain third place overall

MIRI: Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin have challenged Sarawak athletes to this years’ Sukma to improve the last Sukma performance in Pahang by targeting at least 50 gold medals or be ranked third among all competing states.

He said the state government will offer lucrative incentives for athletes who earn at least one gold medal in the Sukma be held in Perlis from May 26 to June.

“We are targeting at least 50 to 55 gold medals … and we have identified several sports event that will contribute the gold medals , ” Lee stated when met here yesterday.

Among the sports he is expecting to contribute gold medals to Sarawak are swimming, archery and bowling.

An athlete who obtains his first gold medal will receive RM 5,000 while RM 7,000.00 will be given for the second gold.

He, however, reminded the athletes to work hard to improve on Sarawak’s performance in Pahang.

“I have high hopes that every athlete we are sending to this years’ Sukma will perform well and contribute medals to the state,” Lee added.

Lee , who is also Assistant Minister of Communications, said a camp for the state contingent will be held in Kuching on May 21 before they fly to Perlis.
