LAHAD DATU: An Indonesian man was shot dead when he tried to open fire at police personnel at Ladang G&G, Jalan Paris 2 here on Sunday.

State Crime Investigation Department chief SAC Omar Mammah yesterday said the shooting took place at 12.35pm after three policemen went to the plantation to investigate a case under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

Omar said as police were approaching the suspect’s house to detain him, he stepped out carrying a baby, believed to be his grandchild, while a home-made gun or ‘Bakakuk’ was hung on his body.

“The suspect put the baby on the floor about 90 feet from the police officers and aimed the gun towards them. Everyone at the scene, including the plantation manager, immediately fled.

“One of the police personnel ordered the suspect to put down his gun but he ignored the order and rushed towards them while aiming the gun,” he said.

Omar said to defend their lives, one of the police personnel shot the suspect on his thigh. However, the suspect kept moving towards them and the officer was forced to fire another shot.

He said that on further inspection of the suspect’s body, police found three machetes tied around his waist and 12 bullets.

“The suspect’s body was taken to the district hospital for post-mortem while the case will be investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code,” he added.

Also present at the press conference were district police chief ACP Shamsudin Mat, district crime officer ASP Ladamah Sulaiman and investigation officer Inspector Mohamad Soffi Jalal.
