KUALA TERENGGANU: Former Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said sought forgiveness from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak over his decision to quit Umno during a meeting in Putrajaya at midday today, said Terengganu state executive councillor for Tourism and Culture Datuk Mohd Jidin Shafee.

He said at the meeting, Ahmad also retracted his resignation letter to leave Umno and quit all his posts in the party.

Ahmad, who is also Kijal assemblyman, also promised the prime minister that he would give his full backing to the new leadership in Terengganu, Mohd Jidin, who is also in Putrajaya, told Bernama in a telephone interview.

Mohd Jidin said Ajil assemblyman Ghazali Taib who followed Ahmad in quitting Umno, also sought forgiveness from Najib and retracted his resignation letter as well.

Mohd Jidin said Ahmad and Ghazali also voiced their regret over their hasty actions.

“Following the developments, we 17 BN assemblymen (in Terengganu) have agreed to continue to lead Terengganu without any problems.

“The past is the past. Let’s not dwelve on it anymore. We have to be united in the interest of party solidarity,” he added.

Early yesterday, Ahmad and Ghazali had announced their resignation from Umno and declared themselves independent assemblymen.

On Monday, Ahmad had resigned as the Menteri of Besar Terengganu to make way for Seberang Takir assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman to be appointed as the new Menteri Besar. -Bernama
