See Hua Group reporters make major haul of Kinabalu Shell Press Awards

KOTA KINABALU: Reporters from the See Hua Group in Sabah made a major sweep of the honours at the Kinabalu Shell Press Awards here on Saturday night, winning a total of 29 awards, including 12 gold awards and total cash prizes of more than RM40,000.

Reporters from The Borneo Post, See Hua Daily News and Utusan Borneo took the gold awards in most of the major categories, including a clean sweep of the coveted Journalism Award (Feature and News Feature) in all three categories, namely Bahasa Malaysia, English and Chinese language.

Mariah Airiens Doksil from The Borneo Post, Jong Khiam Zhung from See Hua Daily News and Yusop Teppo from Utusan Borneo won the gold award for their entries in the Journalism Award (Feature and News Feature) category and pocketed RM5,000 each.

Utusan Borneo won its five gold awards through Henry Bating (Journalism Award for News Stringers), Bellu Mintow (KadazanDusun Section), Siti Aisyah Narudin (Business and Economic Reporting) Isab Khan Mukarab Shah (Sports Journalism) and Yusop Teppo (Journalism Award Feature and News).

The Borneo Post’s gold came through Sandra Sokial (News Reporting), Mariah Doksil (Journalism Award Feature and News Feature), Lester Bingkasan and Arfandi Jaafar (Sports Journalism) and Aniq Azraei Mat Salleh (Sports Photography).

See Hua’s gold was won by Jong Khiam Zhung (Journalism Award (Feature and News Feature) and (News Reporting-Chinese) and Wong Jwu Yiing (Business and Economic Reporting-Chinese).

Sandra, Siti Aisyah and Toh Pei Tin (from See Hua Daily News) were merit winners in the Entertainment Reporting category while Aniq and James Tseu Kui Jin won merits in the Best News Photograph category.

In the Sports Journalism category, Yong Ted Phen from See Hua Daily News and his colleagues from Utusan Borneo, Desmond Qwek Tsy Teo and Vitalis Bingkasan, won the merit award.

Yong also won the merit award in the Business and Economic Reporting category as did Utusan Borneo’s Hashim Othman and Borneo Post’s Mariah.

In the Environmental Journalism award category, Agnes Chung Yeh Nie from See Hua Daily News, Amy Thong Dangin and Jenne John Lajiun, both from The Borneo Post, won merit awards for their entries.

Yusop, who won the Journalism Award (Feature and News Feature) Gold, also won a merit award in the Environmental Journalism Photography category and his colleague Hashim won a merit award in the Best Picture category.

Jong was also awarded the Most Promising Journalist Award.
