KENINGAU: A man was nearly killed when the car he was driving collided with a truck and caught fire here yesterday night.

The victim, aged 30, was driving home when he lost control of his Perodua Kancil car and collided with a truck carrying 8 tons of oil palm fruits around 6pm at Mile 22 Keningau – Tenom road.

District Fire and Rescue Department Chief, Janil Jaya said as a result of the accident, the Kancil car was completely burned, while the victim suffered serious injuries including a broken leg and was rushed to the Keningau Hospital by other road users.

“The victim was initially trapped in the Kancil but other road users managed to free him and took him away from the car before the it suddenly burst into flames. The truck driver and a passenger did not suffer any injuries,” he said.

Janil said eye witnesses at the scene claimed that the Kancil driver, who was heading to Tenom from Keningau, had lost control of his vehicle and entered the right lane before colliding with a truck from the opposite direction.

Meanwhile, Janil advised vehicle owners in the district to provide fire extinguishers in their vehicles so that similar incidents could be avoided in the future.
