Kaartic wins Sarawak’s fi rst medal

KANGAR: Karate-do delivered the first medal for the Sarawak contingent at the 17th edition of Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) in Perlis yesterday.

Kaartic Chiramjeevi took the bronze in the men’s kumite 55kg held at Sri Kayangan Hall of the Perlis Matriculation College.

In squash, Ma Si Yi and Jean Wong Zhi Xuan bowed out of the fi rst round of the women’s singles at the squash centre of the Perlis Sports Complex yesterday.

Ma, a student of SMK Chung Hua Miri, lost 4-11, 1-11, 12-14 to Nazihah Hanis Abd Razak of Kedah.

Ma’s schoolmate Jean provided stiffer resistance before losing 5-11, 11-8, 9-11, 5-11 to Selangor’s The Min Jie.

Despite the setback, team manager Jewa Singh was satisfi ed with the duo’s performance.

“Their performance is okay so far and they have pushed themselves to play well.

They are playing against higher seeded players,” he said.

With the girls out of contention, Jewa is turning his focus to Afeeq Abideen Ismail and Sanjay Singh Chal who will see action in the second round of the boy’s competition later yesterday.

Afeeq will take on Yuen Jee Wern of Selangor while Sanjay’s opponent is Mohd Aqif Mohd Shukri of Terengganu.

Meanwhile, 2012 Sukma bronze medallist Zaranah Zulkifl ee successfully cleared her fi rst round hurdle in the women’s below 57kg silat olahraga by beating Wan Nur Syafi qah at Dewan Rakan Sukan, Perlis Sports Complex yesterday.

Also progressing to the second round was Muhamad Hafi z Remmy Iskandar who defeated Mohd Zairy Mohd Osman of Perlis.

Those losing their bouts yesterday were Saifudin Sabli (men’s 75-80kg), Sheikh Khairul (men’s 65-70kg) and Muhamad At-Tamimi Hamid (men’s 60- 65kg quarterfi nals).

However, Sarawak still have three other exponents who will compete in the quarter-fi nals of their respective categories later yesterday.

They are Munirah Daud who will take on Nur Najati Nazwah of Terengganu in the women’s 50-55kg, Maliana Rajalan who will fi ght Aina Mardhiah from Perak and Norshahrizan Abdullah who is up against Mohd Alif Hanafi of Sabah in the men’s 70-75kg.
