TELUK INTAN: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said women in the country have played an important role in nation-building.

“Women have shown their capability and ability in achieving an equitable, peaceful and more prosperous society,” he said in his speech during a Perak state level ‘Purple Walk’ programme organised in conjunction with International Women’s Day at Dataran Menara Condong, here yesterday.

Muhyiddin said the empowerment of women, gender equity and inclusion in decision making, play a central role both as a litmus test and as an active variable in shaping a democratic, stabilized and developed society.

He said women also played a crucial role in deciding who their representatives in Parliament would be by picking the right choice of candidate during elections, especially in deciding victory for Barisan Nasional (BN) and its candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong, during the Teluk Intan by-election.

“In the Teluk Intan by-election which is set for May 31, women can assist the government of the day to ensure a victory for BN,” he said after receiving a ‘Happy Birthday’ card for his 67th birthday, from 200 children from 16 homes throughout Perak.

During the presentation of the card, all participants of the ‘Purple Walk’ programme sang the ‘Happy Birthday’ song for Muhyiddin before the start of the 1km walk to Padang Bandaran, here.

Muhyiddin who was accompanied by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir during the walkabout, later held a meet-the-people session at the Pak Ya coffee shop and joined by Mah who was campaigning at the nearby area.

Muhyiddin ordered a ‘teh tarik’ and ‘nasi lemak’ which is a signature menu at Pak Ya coffee shop which has been in existence since the days of Japanese rule. — Bernama
