Police need to enhance capacity in managing complex environment — Muhiyiddin

BATU PAHAT: The country’s economic and social strides call for the police to enhance their capacity in managing a more complex environment, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said the police should be equipped with top notch infrastructure to enable them to grow in tandem with the country’s level of development.

“Logistics and infrastructure equipment are a necessity in the quest to produce a world-class police service,” he said when opening of the RM61 million Batu Pahat Police District Headquarters here yesterday.

He said the police service could not lag behind in the maze of dynamic world environment that had given rise to complex social phenomena and crimes.

Muhyiddin urged senior police officers to place importance on knowledge and skills enrichment through experience.

The police culture that has spanned over 206 years should be capitalised and fine-tuned with the latest technology and tailored to changing times, he added.

He said the society placed high expectations of the police but due to the wrong perception of high crime rate, their confidence level of the force was low.

“However, with the introduction of the National Key Result Areas on crime under the Government Transformation Programme on Jan 28, 2010, efforts to lower the crime rate had borne fruit,” he said.

Muhyiddin said the negative perception had somewhat been offset through the police relentless efforts in reducing crimes, hence increasing the level of public confidence toward the force.

“God willing, in the long run the rates of crime index, conviction, cases solved as well as public confidence and negative perception will be stabilised to a more realistic level,” he said.

He also said that the police sacrifices could not be denied as their services were sought in the interest of the society.

Paying tribute to the police, he said their sacrifices in defending the country were recorded in the annals of history.  — Bernama
