KOTA KINABALU: State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Salleh Said yesterday advised SMK Taun Gusi Kota Belud’s pre-university graduates that a good command of English will ensure them of better opportunities in the working world.

Speaking at the school’s convocation for its 2013/2014 STPM students, Salleh stressed to them the importance of the English language as it will open up better employment opportunities for them.

“I therefore laud SMK Taun Gusi for its approach towards ensuring that its students have a good command of both Bahasa Melayu and English. This is a proactive step towards preparing the students for the future,” he said.

Salleh who is also Usukan assemblyman, added that the good cooperation between parents and the school authorities can raise the educational institution’s aspiration to improve its students’ academic success.

According to him, the close ties between both quarters can also increase the parents’ as well as community’s involvement and sense of belonging towards the school.

This is line with the Education Ministry’s aim to provide prestigious and high quality education, and parents or guardians can help out by playing an assisting role towards the success of the government’s efforts, he added.

“Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) must be fully utilised to improve the students’ welfare and prosperity,” he said.

Meanwhile, Super Principal of SMK Taun Gusi, Suid Hanapi, said that the school placed importance on ensuring that its students have a strong command of English and Bahasa Melayu.

The school also encourages students to be well versed in IT, he said adding that this is to assist the students’ development in their communication skills as required by the job market.

According to Suid, SMK Taun Gusin is also the first school in the district to allow its pre-university students to wear formal clothing every Thursday and Friday as they believe this will help increase their confidence and personal appearance.
