KUCHING: City dwellers and visitors can now enjoy free taxi rides within the city for a week if they use the MyTeksi app to book cabs.

MyTeksi, Southeast Asia’s largest taxi booking mobile app, is waiving all taxi fares worth RM30 during the promotion period to celebrate its official launch yesterday, following its successful beta trial here.

The promotion is for unlimited use so passengers can redeem it repeatedly for a whole week, but it is valid for rides within the city only. The promotion started yesterday and ends on June 4.

Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chief executive officer Datuk Rashid Khan, who officiated at the launching ceremony, described as “a wonderful move” the launch of the app before the Rainforest World Music Festival.

“We are sure visitors will find this handy and a pleasant addition to the public transport services currently available in the state,” he told reporters covering the event.

MyTeksi deputy general manager Jaygan Fu said, “Kuching has been very welcoming to us. We will do our best to always improve our service here to make the taxi experience here safe, certain and fast.”

Fu added that MyTeksi was also delighted to be part of the Rainforest World Music Festival.

“This is a world class and acclaimed event, and we’re very excited to be here.”

To redeem the free-ride promotion, MyTeksi users need to key in Kuching in the ‘Promo Code’ field. First time users must download the MyTeksi app.

To use the app, customers need to download the app first. It is available for free on iOS devices, Android, Windows and selected Blackberry smartphones.

MyTeksi automatically detects the commuter’s current location using the smartphone’s in-built GPS (Global Positioning System). The app will then show the number of taxis within a certain radius.

After the commuter had selected his or her destination, the booking request will be sent to taxi drivers within the radius so that they can bid for the job.

The taxi driver nearest to the commuter gets the job.

Within a minute, the commuter receives a booking confirmation coupled with crucial information about the ETA, taxi number, and the driver’s contact details. The commuter can also track the real-time location of the booked taxi.
