SARIKE: Two freshwater turtles were saved from the pot after a concerned Buddhist spotted them being offered for sale at the Central Market here yesterday morning.

He bought the two turtles weighing about 50kg and 30kg for an undisclosed price.

The devotee who declined to be identified said he would release the two turtles into their natural habitat. His deed was in line with the Buddhist teaching which encourages its devotee to be kind to animals, he said.

According to an old belief, by being kind to animals, we would be blessed with a peaceful life and longevity in return, he added.

In the eyes of the law, he had done his role in saving the protected species.
