KUCHING: The third edition of the Datuk Haji Fadillah Haji Yusuf Sepak Takraw Championship kicked off yesterday.

The tournament in the previous two years were held in conventional halls.

Organising chairman Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel believes this year’s championship is the first sepak takraw tournament in Sarawak to be held in a shopping complex.

“We wanted to do something different this year and we are confident that this tournament is historical. We do not recall when a sepak takraw tournament has ever been held at a shopping mall before this,” he said.

A total of 16 teams from all around the country have registered for the two-day tournament. The top three teams stand to win cash prizes of RM2000, RM1000 and RM500.

Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof and Malaysia Sepak Takraw Association (PSM) vice president Datuk Paruwadi were present at the opening ceremony at The Hills Shopping Mall.

Fadillah pledged a grant of RM10,000 for the organisers.

Speaking to reporters after the opening ceremony, he said he was honoured that the tournament was named after him.
