AAA suggests VLT of 60 per cent for front windshield

SHAH ALAM: The Auto Audio, Accessories and Air-Condition Traders Association of Malaysia (AAA) has urged the government to reduce the minimum Visible Light Transmission level (VLT) for front windshields of passenger vehicles from the current 70 per cent to 60 per cent.

Its exco member, James Goh, said this was necessary as some passenger cars like

Proton Saga were already equipped with VLT of 72 per cent even before tinting and this has created problems for customers to have darker tint for their front windshield.

“The issue here is not about fixing darker tint for front windshields but there are cars which have 72 per cent VLT even before tinting and this has created problems to customers to have their cars tinted.

“Eventually, additional tinting works for cars which has VLT of 72 per cent even before tinting will reduce VLT level and thus violate the minimum 70 per cent VLT set by the government for front passenger car

windshields. The value of VLT decreases as the tint darkens,” he told a press conference here, yesterday.

Goh also suggested that the VLT of the side glasses of the front and rear passenger seats and rear windshield be fixed at more than 40 per cent.

He said AAA objected to the proposal of having very dark tints below 35 per cent VLT for passenger cars as this

would make it difficult for authorities to carry out their enforcement.

“For instance, they cannot see if the driver is wearing the safety belt or not,” he added.

Goh also wanted all VLT-testing devices to be streamlined to ensure that passenger cars tinting was within the legal limit, besides having uniformed operation over VLT.

He said the AAA would submit a memorandum to the Transport Ministry next Tuesday on the request made by the association on the VLT issue. — Bernama
