MELAKA: The Home Ministry will be tabling a bill called the Inhalants Act to combat abuse of glue among the public, especially youths.

Director-general of the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) Suhaimi Abdullah said the bill which was in the final stages of being drawn up would be sent to the Attorney-General’s Office in the near future to be studied.

“The matter has long been discussed but its implementation is difficult so we hope that the new law would help overcome glue sniffing among the people,” he told reporters after a meeting with the Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron here yesterday.

He said the implementation of the bill was important as the number of youths who are abusing glue was increasing and there were no laws to detain or punish them.

Meanwhile, Idris said the state government planned to table a new enactment to control the sale of glue to prevent it from being sold everywhere.

He said through the enactment, the sale of glue according to specific amounts would be controlled to the business involved in using glue such as bicycle, motor, car and shoe shops.

“If need be, the name of the person who buys the glue must be recorded and outlets which do not use glue are prohibited from selling it,” he said. — Bernama
