SIBU: The 15th Sibu Amateur Open Golf Championship (SAOGC) for the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai Challenge Trophy to be held at the Sibu Golf Club here on June 13-15 has attracted 95 top golfers from seven golf clubs in Sarawak and Sabah.

The clubs are Sabah Golf and Country Club, Kelab Golf Miri, Kelab Golf Bintulu, Kelab Golf Sarawak, Samarahan Country Club, Sarawak Junior Golf First Association and Sibu Golf Club.

SAOGC is the biggest annual event in the calendar of Sibu Golf Club (SGC).

SGC president Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck said the competition was first staged in 1999.

Event organising chairman Winston Lau Chu Ku said the Sibu course offered challenges that no other golf courses in Sarawak could match.

“Of the 18 holes we have, there are no less than 15 of them having water hazards. This golf course has proven to be a daunting course to conquer,” Lau, who is SGC captain, explained.

Lee Ka Tung of SGC has reigned supreme in the championship for nine times, but the current defending champion is Lau Ching Leong.

The championship is a gross over nett event and it is divided into men’s gross, men’s nett, ladies’ gross, ladies’ nett and invited guests’ nett.

The prize-giving ceremony is expected at noon on June 15 at SGC house.
