State junior paddlers receive incentives

KUCHING: State junior paddlers who put up a good performance at the 34th Malaysia Milo Youth Table Tennis Championship in Segamat, Johor were rewarded for their efforts yesterday.

The medallists received cash incentives from Table Tennis Association of Sarawak (TTAS) chairman Richard Wee Liang Chiat.

Those paddlers and coaches from Kuching also received cash incentives from TTAS vice chairman Simon Wong Wee Khiong.

In the national championship for Youth U18 and U15 held from May 30 to June 4, Johor, Sarawak captured two gold, one silver and four bronze medals to finish third overall behind Selangor and Pulau Pinang.

The two golds came from the Girls U15 team of Catherine Chan Zhe Yan and Foo Wui Jia (Miri), Alice Chang Li Sian and Andrea Tan Ruen Yuen (Kuching) and Karen Lynn Dick of Sibu and the Girls U-15 doubles of Catherine Chan and Foo Wui Jia.

Jason Siaw Ting Shen, Clement Sim Kwong Zhi and Rayford Kho Jin Hian of Kuching, Alex Lo Lik Fu and Calvin Chieng Chun of Miri finished second in the Boys U18 team event.

The four bronzes were contributed by the Boys U15 team of Wong Zhan Huan (Miri), Derrick Tsai Chang Fung, Louis Chung Kian Fu (Kuching), Wong Khing Yeu (Sibu) and Ting Ung Kai of Samarahan; Clement Sim and Rayford Kho in the Boys U18 doubles, Alice Chang in the Girls U15 singles and Rayford Kho in the Boys U18 singles.

Apart from that, five players from Sarawak were ranked among the top 10 players.

They are Jason Siaw and Calvin Chieng who were Boys U18 No. 6 and 8 respectively, Derrick Tsai was Boys U15 No. 6 while Alice Chang and Catherine Chan were Girls U15 No. 3 and No. 5 respectively.

For his excellent performance at the championship, Rayford Kho was selected to represent Malaysia in the 24th South-East Asia Junior Table Tennis Championship in Brunei from June 16-21.
