Chong Wei moves closer to clinch fifth Japan Open title

KUALA LUMPUR: World number one men’s singles shuttler, Datuk Lee Chong Wei is edging closer to clinch his fifth Japan Open title after smashing his way into the final of the tournament held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

In the semi-final yesterday, the 31-year-old defending champion, took 47 minute to dislodge fourth seed, Japanese Kenichi Tago with a 21-15 and 21-17 win in the match.

Chong Wei will meet eighth seed, Hu Yun of Hong Kong in the final today.

Hu Yun cruised to the final after pulling off a major surprise by defeating third seed, Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark; 21-13, 19-21 and 21-15 in another semi-final encounter which lasted 62 minutes.

For the record, Chong Wei has won the Japan Open four times – 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2013.—Bernama
