TELUK INTAN: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday announced several initiatives for the development of Teluk Intan, including the building of 5,000 housing units under the Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (PR1MA) programme and the establishment of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) branch.

In fulfilling the Barisan Nasional (BN) manifesto in the by-election for the Teluk Intan parliamentary constituency, the Prime Minister also announced an allocation of RM5 million for development projects in the area.

“BN maintains the philosophy and principle that the party fulfills its pledges and carries the hopes of the people in the area,” he said at a gathering of the people and the launching of PR1MA Teluk Intan, here.

For the PR1MA project, Najib said 1,000 housing units would be built in the area as a start.

The PR1MA Teluk Intan project involves a total area of about 202 hectares.

The PR1MA project in Teluk Intan is a cooperation between Perbadanan PR1MA Malaysia, Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak (PKNP) and Koperasi Pegawai-pegawai Melayu Malaysia Bhd (MOCCIS).

For the establishment of the UPSI branch, Najib said the campus would have 1,000 teachers who would be trained in the vocational and technical fields.

“The Teluk Intan area will benefit considerably (from the construction of the UPSI branch)…..(the branch) will be ready within the next three to four years,” he said.

Besides the RM5 million allocation, he said Teluk Intan Member of Parliament, Datuk Mah Siew Keong, as a future minister, would also receive a special allocation which would be utilised for the benefit of the constituents.

He said all the allocations channelled were to fulfill the requests of the Teluk Intan constituents.

The Prime Minister also recorded his appreciation to the Teluk Intan voters for supporting the BN which led to Mah’s victory in the Parliamentary by-election on May 31 when he defeated DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud with a majority of 238 votes.

“I came to ensure that the (BN) pledges are fulfilled. I want to express my highest appreciation to the voters who supported the BN.

“I will not be comfortable if I don’t come down today to meet the people of Teluk Intan,” he said.

Najib said the victory proved that the voters were confident the BN was a party that fulfilled its pledges and brought new hopes to the constituents.

“We won because the people’s confidence in the BN has increased. Many feel that if the BN is given an opportunity, there will be a change in the environment in terms of the socio-economic development of the area,” he added. — Bernama
