KUALA LUMPUR: The construction of a new international airport in Kedah will accommodate the needs of burgeoning passengers and cargo services in the northern states.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir said the Penang International Airport would not be able to accommodate the increase in cargo and passengers in northern states in the future.

He said this at a media conference after opening the 2014 Kedah Festival here yesterday.

Recently, the state government had made a proposal for the construction of an international airport on a 6,000ha site in Kulim to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Meanwhile, the 2014 Kedah Festival is aimed at promoting the cultures, traditions and tourist attractions in Kedah and collect funds for the setting up of a Kedah House in the national capital.
