KOTA KINABALU: Love is in the air as former Borneo Post journalist Wilson Lee Gain Loon popped the question to his doctor girlfriend Irene Ti Lian Lian after a mind-blowing battle as Godzilla finished off the malevolent duo and saved the day.

Like any other movie outing, filled with the munching and sipping sounds of popcorns and fizzy drinks at the Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) in Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, Kota Kinabalu recently, Ti had no idea what was waiting for her at the ending of the movie Godzilla.

Her now-fiance plotted the surprise for nearly four months, not only arranging for the ambush, but also producing a romantic video comprised of animated flashbacks and blessings by close friends from across the world which was featured on the big screen during the proposal.

“It was indeed a challenge to put together everyone, everything, and without my darling (Ti) knowing and sensing what was going on throughout the past months,” said Lee, who was immersed in joy and happiness as Ti gave him a big “yes”.

“We have known each other for more than 12 years, since we first met at Institut Sinaran as we entered tertiary education. We have been best friends the whole time, until we admitted our feelings for each other a year ago,” Lee added. “And, I know she is the one.”

Romance was palpable when the cinema started rolling the proposal video, which Lee had specially prepared, sharp at the end of the movie Godzilla. Taking the moment that stunned Ti, Lee sneaked out of the hall and changed into a foam muscle-chest-and-six-pack outfit, carrying with him a bouquet of 99 roses.

As Lee re-entered the hall, he dropped to one knee and presented his lover of more than a decade with a diamond ring.

The crowd in the rows behind the lovebirds hooted and hollered, as Lee offered and Ti accepted. Only when the lights went on, it was then revealed that the 80-over crowd was actually close friends, former schoolmates and teachers.

“I was told by the manager-in-charge that I am the first to propose in this cinema here at Suria Sabah.

Therefore, I must not let down the moviegoers today, as I am playing the leading role in my own ‘movie’,” Lee winked as he spoke.  “And, I chose Godzilla to play the appetising prelude, as I know I am more handsome than ‘him’,” he joked.

As Lee, donned in fake muscle costume, fitted the ring to her finger and vowed to love her all his life, Ti responded with tears of joy, saying “You (Lee) look great with your ‘six-pack’. I love you; you’re always my teddy bear.”

The couple expressed their deepest gratitude to their friends, former schoolmates and teachers who came for the surprise, as well as to GSC Suria Sabah and D-Capture Studio for their assistance and support, from preparation to end, in ensuring the success of the proposal event.

Lee is now the head of Planning and Change Management for Petronas Sabah and Labuan Regional Office, while Ti is a medical officer at Changi General Hospital, Singapore. The couple took their day-off to watch the reboot of the most classic giant monster cult film franchise – Godzilla, as he decided to give her the most “gigantic” surprise of her lifetime.
