KUCHING: Wushu can promote unity as it involved childrenfrom all races and religion working together.

Assistant Culture and Heritage Minister Liwan Lagang said this at the opening of the 24th Nanyang Wushu Kung-fu Festival Championship here yesterday.

“This is a good start or foundation in building a harmonious and peaceful society,” he commented.

Training prepares them to face challenges in life.

“They will be able to taste the sweetness of victory and the bitterness of defeat in a competition, just as they will learn that life is not all smooth sailing,” he said.

“I am glad to learn that Nanyang Wushu has groomed exponents to participate in numerous international wushu championships all over the world.

“I understand that Nanyang Wushu recently won 14 gold medals at the Zhong Hua Wushu World Championship in

Taiwan. This is an incredible achievement as it helps to bring the standard of Wushu here to international standard.”

Earlier, Nanyang Wushu Federation of Sarawak State chairman Prof Dato Dr Song Swee Hee said the championship will promote good sportsmanship and self-discipline among students.
