MIRI: A 23-year-old teacher and a 14-year-old schoolgirl here became the latest victims of attempted rape in two separate locations in Permyjaya between 4pm on Monday and 7am yesterday.

The teacher was at her family’s living room with her mother in Taman Ceria in Permyjaya when an unknown man wearing a helmet and armed with a machete suddenly appeared before them.

The man, believed to be a local, then pointed the machete at the teacher and her mother and instructed them to give him their jewelleries and money.

It was then that he demanded the teacher to sit on the sofa before ripping her ‘sarong’ with the machete.

The victim who was terrified then screamed for help which alerted their neighbour.

Seeing the neighbour, the man immediately fled the scene.

Meanwhile, in the second incident, the school girl was walking to her kitchen when she encountered an unknown man wearing a cap, sunglasses and a mask. Wielding a machete, the man told the girl not to scream and led her to the family’s sitting room before telling her to lie down on the sofa. It is understood that the girl then told the man to take anything from the house and leave but he refused. Instead, he punched the victim’s stomach and face and slapped her.

He then took the victim to her mother’s bedroom and pushed her before raping her. He then fled the scene. Both victims have lodged police reports on the incidents.

Miri police chief ACP Gan Tian Kee told a press conference yesterday the police believed that the cruel act was committed by the same man.

“At first, the 14-year-old girl was thought to have been raped but after we carried thorough check-up at hospital, the doctor found that there was no penetration involved. So, we reclassified the case and will be investigated under Section 376/511 for attempted rape,” Gan said.

He added that the police were also looking for a man identified as Aspin Amut, in his 20s, whose last address is Lot 7241-2-16 Quarterplex Bandar Baru Permyjaya to facilitate their investigation into both cases.
