MIRI: The technical committee of Borneo International Yachting Challenge (BIYC) have been urged to consider including a Brunei leg in the series.

This was the challenge posed by Permanent Secretary to Ministry of Tourism Sarawak Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik at the welcoming dinner-cum-prize presentation of Miri Harbour Race on Sunday night.

“The inclusion of Brunei will help to uplift the standard and prestige of the challenge in the region. It will definitely attract not only more participation but also sponsors,” he said

“The inclusion of Brunei as one of the legs in BIYC will give a truly international aura and prestige to the only yachting event in this region or in Borneo.”

He pledged the government’s support through the Ministry of Tourism Sarawak to assist and discuss with Brunei government and its agencies to work out the arrangement.

“Sarawak, Sabah, Labuan and Brunei are having strong link and ties in the history, economic and cultural aspects. Let us work it out as to enhance and strengthen this bond for common good especially in term of tourism.”

The Borneo International Yachting Challenge is a Category Three event which caters to the five categories of racing, cruising, sports, classic and ocean multi-hull. The committee was also urged to lobby for BIYC to be sanctioned by the Asian Yachting Circuit.

Meanwhile, Miri working committee chairman Troy Yaw disclosed that they have a vision and mission to be the first Malaysian team to participate in the Australia world renowned Sydney to Hobart race. He revealed their quest to promote BIYC and Malaysian sailors to the world sailing arena through Ulu Mulu and crew from Royal Malaysian Navy.
