SIBU: Sarawak Archery Association are currently holding state-wide coaching clinics to raise interest in the sport.

Its secretary Chong Yap Jin said the courses were meant for coaches who are seen as front liners in scouting talents especially among school children.

“The potential ones will be enlisted for our development programmes which include centralised training.

“Eventually, these are the batch of archers who will help popularise archery,” he explained.

Chong was speaking at the closing of the basic archery coaching clinic for Sibu coaches held here recently.

Among those at the event were Penghulu Tiong Tung Loo, Sibu Division Archery Association secretary Simon Wong Ing Hoo and vice-chairman of Sarawak Zhang Clan Association Eric Tiong.

About 30 coaches from schools and Sarawak Zhang Clan Association attended the two-day clinic.

Chong was happy that the coaches had passed their examination with flying colors, which he said augured well for the development of the sport.

According to him, Sibu has been picked as the venue for the 10th edition of Sarawak Open Indoor Archery Competition from Nov 21-24.

About 100 archers from throughout the state, most of them first-timers in competition, are expected to vie for the Datuk Tiong King Sing Challenge Cup.

Sibu had twice hosted the event.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Zhang Clan Association’s Eric Tiong said they were conducting archery practice every Sunday at 2pm at Grand Heights. They are open for those interested.
