KUCHING: The State Library and Lincoln Corner Resource Centre Kuala Lumpur have lined up a string of educational and fun activities this week in conjunction with Lincoln Corner’s 10th anniversary celebration.

The celebration kicked off with an English camp featuring speakers Angie Mizeur and Kumutha Malar Kandasamy yesterday for selected secondary school students aged 13 to 15.

“This camp was held to improve the students’ communication skills in English by giving them a chance to communicate directly with American English speakers.

“This programme has been held since 2004,” revealed librarian Razak Rambili yesterday.

According to him, there are only eight Lincoln Corners throughout the country including one in East Malaysia, which is located inside the State Library.

The rest are located in Penang, Johor, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and two in Kedah.

One of the speakers, Angie who is a public diplomacy officer said the camp was aimed at sharing and exchanging experiences and cultures between Malaysia and United States of America (USA), while aiming to help students practise English with American English speakers.

“We guide them through various speaking and listening activities. We also guide them in accessing the rich resources of the Lincoln Corner collection in the State Library,” she said.

Among the activities in the camp were treasure hunt and skit group performance.

Angie said the treasure hunt gave students exposure to resources in the State Library which also enhanced their knowledge.

An ‘Education USA Talk’ is taking place today (June 18) at the library’s special collection room from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

Lauran Parsons of Malaysian American Commission on Education Exchange (Macee) is the speaker for the talk.

Tomorrow, there will be a Lincoln Corner talk, an Alumni International Visitor Leadership Programme, presented by Japri Bujang Masli.

He will talk about libraries in the US. As such librarians are welcomed to the talk, which will start at 2pm at the Special Collection Room.

On Friday, a chef from USA Karen Stiegler will be doing some cooking demonstration of delicious meals at 2.30pm.

On that same day, a movie under stars featuring ‘Frozen’ will be showing at the lakeside at 7.30pm.

More than 2,000 people are expected to attend the free show.

The last activity for this week, a children’s story telling session, will be held at Lincoln Corner from 11am to noon on Saturday (June 21).
