KOTA SAMARAHAN: The US Embassy’s Counsellor for Public Affairs Bonnie S Gutman handed over 100 books to Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) vice chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Kadim Suaidi at a ceremony held at the Centre for Academic Information Services (CAIS) recently.

According to a press release from Unimas, the Library of America (LOA) Book Series covers a wide range of genre in literature including fiction, history, poetry, drama, essays, philosophy, speeches and so forth, written by renowned American authors such as Mark Twain and Henry David Thoreau.

The books are an excellent channel to understand the history, culture, society and values of the people of United States as well as to appreciate the American perspectives of the human condition, through writings of mystery, adventure, comedy, belief systems, world affairs, morality, and many more themes.

At present, Unimas has stocked three special collections that are received from prominent individuals or authors which are Marvin Rogers Collections, AJN Richards Collection and Heidi Munan Collection.

The book donation by The Library of America Series is set as an initiative for a special corner to be established at CAIS, to provide access to reading materials and resources predominantly on American values and culture.

In his speech, Kadim expressed his gratitude to the US Embassy of Malaysia, specifically The Library of America Series, for selecting Unimas as
the institution to receive its books.

He also hoped that further collaboration with the US Embassy in Malaysia will be established, to enable more scholarly activities to be designed and held in Unimas.

The move will also strengthen the good relationship between Malaysia and the United States of America, he said.
