Sarawak girls clinch MSSM volleyball title

KUCHING: Sarawak have again stamped their supremacy in the MSSM U18 Volleyball Championship in Selangor by capturing the girls title and finishing second in the boys competition held at Sekysen 19 Volleyball Hall in Shah Alam from June 7-12.

The Sarawak girls thumped Selangor 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-12) in a lop-sided final while Selangor took the boys crown by beating Sarawak 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17) in the final. Pahang blanked Perak 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-18) to finish third in the girls section while Terengganu came in third in the boys competition after beating Pahang 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 26-24) in the third/fourth placing play-off.

Sarawak bagged more honours with Anderson Chan Kian Hong from SMK Three Rivers, Mukah clinching double awards as the Best Spiker and Most Valuable Player.

As for the girls, Tina Tiong Yong Ting was named as the Best Server, Shannon Lee Ping Ping the Best Receiver while Angela Tang Ling Hui was the Best Spiker and Most Valuable Player of the championship.

Apart from claiming the above honours, four boys and seven girls from Sarawak, based on their rankings, were selected to represent Malaysia in the Asean School Games to be held in Philippines from Nov 29 to Dec 7.

The boys are Patrick Lu Yow Kee (SMK Kai Chung, Bintangor), Anderson Chan (SMK Three Rivers, Mukah), Soon Wei Kiat (Bukit Jalil Sports School) and Ranjit Ramu (SMK St Patrick, Mukah).

Those selected for the national girls team are Tina Tiong (Bukit Jalil Sports School), Shannon Lee (SMK Kai Chung, Bintangor), Angela Tang, Ching Hui Qing, Mandy Chiu Hua Yun, and Alicia Yii Chii Hui (SMK Tung Hua, Sibu).

The state contingent of 12 boys, 12 girls and nine officials was led by Sarikei Education Office head of department Radin Soji and accompanied by MSSM technical advisor Ngu Yu Hu and MSS Sarawak technical advisor Steven Liew Guo Chen.

Three hundred and sixty players representing 16 teams took part in the national championship hosted by MSS Selangor.
