KOTA KINABALU: The Road Transport Department (RTD) issued 106 summonses to motorists for numerous road offences during an operation along Jalan Sulaman, near the University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) here on Monday.

RTD deputy director general Datuk Yusof Ayub said 215 vehicles and 75 motorcycles were checked during the three-hour operation which began at 8pm.

“About 73 summonses were issued to vehicle owners for numerous offences, which include 45 for driving without valid driving licence.

“Thirty-three motorcyclists were also fined for numerous offences, which include 22 for riding without any license.

“Three motorcycles have also been confiscated for failure to comply with RTD rules,” he said when met during the operation on Monday.

Also present was Sabah RTD director Shuhaili Mohd Taufek.

Yusof said the operation would also concentrate on fancy car plates, modified tyres, expired road tax, dark tinted windows and high intensity definition (HID) light.

Yusof said the operation also found that many vehicles were fitted with registration number plates which did not meet the required specifications.

He said the attitude of drivers who were keen on trying new things was probably the cause of the increase in the installation of such registration number plates.

Yusof also disclosed that State RTD has collected RM3,059,130 in compound fines and issued 36,629 notices between January and May this year.

The total amount of fines imposed by court on traffic offences was RM1,005,790, involving over 20,000 cases.

“Seven main traffic offences recorded were failure to wear seatbelts (1,048 cases), cutting across double lines (801 cases), cutting queue (617 cases), not stopping at red lights (560 cases), using mobile phone while driving (149 cases), not wearing helmets (73 cases) and abusing emergency lanes (53 cases).

“For technical offences, they mainly involved tinted glasses (4,509 cases), registration number (951 cases), vehicle modification (705 cases) and white light installation (278 cases),” he said.

Yusof also said RTD would nab motorists with warrant of arrest for failing to pay their outstanding summons or summonses.

“We will issue them with a reminder that they have a warrant of arrest and they have two weeks to settle their summons.

“Failure to do so and we will not hesitate to take stern action,” he said.
