LAWAS: More than 40 people staged a peaceful demonstration against the restoration works on the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline near Bukit Beriwan which exploded on June 9.

Among the notables was Ba Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian who is also the state’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chief.

The demonstrators comprising mostly of a Taskforce Committee for the Owners of the Native Customary Rights (NRC) Land later forwarded protest letter to the Petronas president Tan Sri Dato Shamsudin Azhar Abbas.

Their chairman Jameson @James Tai wanted Petronas to carry out a thorough investigation into the explosion,

“We want transparency and request that the outcome of the investigations be made known to the local community. We also want a dialogue session with the oil giant,” he said.

He added that Petronas should also take the necessary measures in the three affected areas in Long Luping area namely Sungai Meringau, Sungai Luping and Sungai Trusan.

Lawas district was rocked by major explosion at 1.58am on June 9, believed caused by the underground gas at Bukit Beriwan. The sky over the district was lighted up which could be seen from Temburong District in Brunei.

The RM4.6 billion gas project started transporting gas from Kimanis, Sabah to the Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) complex in Bintulu, in Jan this year.
