Police snuff out bookie who used dried fish selling premises for illegal football betting

KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu police busted an illegal football betting syndicate that used a premises selling dry fish in Jalan Tok Lam,here yesterday, to carry out illegal football betting activities for the 2014 World Cup.

Following a raid, the 46-year-old owner of the premises who is also believed to be an agent for bookies since the start of the 2014 World Cup, was detained.

Terengganu CID chief ACP Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Hamzah said during the 1pm raid, police found various equipment used for accepting bets in the suspects sling bag.

“We seized a computer set with internet connections in the premises, a modem, two hand phones, note book with betting slips for the 2014 World Cup and RM1,045 cash,” he told reporters here yesterday.

In Kuantan, three suspects, believed to be involved in an illegal betting syndicate for the 2014 World Cup, were detained during raids under ‘Ops Soga’ in Kuantan, Triang and Bera.

Pahang deputy CID chief Supt Md Zamrie Mat Zanu said during the raids carried out between 2am to 3am on June 21, the three suspects aged between 24 and 52 were detained and RM37,000 seized.

“Police also seized a laptop computer, hand phone and Wi-Fi modem,” he said.

Md Zamrie said since the 2014 World Cup started last week, eight suspects involved in illegal betting have been detained. — Bernama
