SIBU: The HKL Sports Volunteer Extraordinaire, another sport award under the Hii King Leng (HKL) Sports Scholarship, has received four entries so far.

Award initiator Dr Gregory Hii Sui Cheng said they were from two outstanding sports leaders in Sibu and two from Miri.

“The sub-committee of the HKL Sports Scholarship will call for a meeting early next month to decide on the winner,” he said when contacted.

Hii said the HKL Sports Volunteer Extraordinaire award aimed at giving recognition to outstanding sports personalities or volunteers who had contributed towards the development of sports in Sarawak.

“They may be managers, coaches, leaders or even financiers who have been running organisations or working tirelessly behind the scene to ensure that Sarawak stay in the forefront in its pursuit for sports glory.

“The award carries a prize money of RM1,500 cash plus a gold-plated commemorative medal,” he said.

Hii, who has been instrumental in promoting the sports development in the state, said the award was an additional avenue for the sports personalities to pursue and it was also to supplement the annual sports award given out by the State Sports Council.

The HKL Sports Scholarship Fund, launched by Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan in 2012 with an initial grant of RM250,000 is to commemorate Hii’s father for the latter’s strong commitment towards charity and sports development in the state.

With increased funding, Hii said they were able to introduce this additional category of award.

Meanwhile, the annual Sarawak Hii King Leng-Top Sports Star (HKL-TSS) award has received about 20 entries from local athletes.

Thus far, about 30 outstanding athletes had benefited from the award.

Among the beneficiaries were swimmers, athletes, bowlers, volleyball players, basketball players, table tennis players and taekwondo exponents.

Each award carries a yearly RM600 (for two years) cash and a commemorative medal.
