Malaysia’s challenge in Australian Open ends

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian badminton squad’s challenge in the Australian Open Super Series 2014 ended with doubles pair Hoon Thien How/Tan Boon Heong’s loss in the sem-finals at the Sydney Sports Centre.

Hoon/Tan who put up an energetic and consistent display during the championship were, however, tamed by the South Korean pair of Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong, losing 14-21 and 16-21.

In the quarter-final, the Malaysian pair were given a stiff fight by China’s Cai Yun/Kai Lu before winning 23-21 and 21-16 in 47 minutes.

The Korean world number two pair progressed after defeating another Malaysian pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong, 21-15 and 24-22, in another quarter-final match.

The Australion Open Super Series, held from June 24 to 29, offers a total prize money of US$750,000. — Bernama
