Sabah crime rate falls five years in a row

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s police force has managed to reduce the crime index in the state five years in a row, said outgoing Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib.

Hamza in his speech before handing over duties to his successor Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman yesterday, said that as of June 29 this year, the state’s crime index was at -4.29 per cent.

He added that the house breaking index had also decreased to -19.53 per cent while the number of charges increased to 73.93 per cent above the Key Performance Index set at 35 per cent.

According to Hamza, the crime index for Sabah registered at -5.06 per cent in 2010 and in 2011 it was -13.14 per cent and last year it was recorded at -5.15 per cent.

He also said that with the ongoing World Cup tourney, the state police had launched its Ops Sogo against illegal betting since June 12 and as of June 28, 15 operations have been carried out which resulted in the arrest of 18 people between the ages of 19 to 57.

“We also seized three computers and 21 handphones as well as RM15,914,” he said.

Yesterday’s handing over ceremony was witnessed by Internal Security and Public Order director Datuk Wira Salleh Mat Rashid.

Hamza has been promoted to Deputy Director of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department in Bukit Aman and he assured his successor as well as the Sabah police contingent that they will always have his support and assistance.
