Youths should mingle, not huddle over tablets – Rep

SIBU: It’s a restless wind of change — the rapid advancement of technology churning out new gadgets, which is causing the younger generation to shy away from outdoor activities.

According to Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee, many were into themselves, barricaded at home over the Internet.

“They don’t mingle with others and this is not good for a multi-racial country like Malaysia.

“We should nurture young people to get to know each other. This is important to strengthen racial unity and harmony. This will go a long way to build tolerance among each other.

“Any form of suspicion should be avoided (which is) caused by being unfamiliar with another’s culture,” Dr Annuar said when asked on the objectives of the ‘Program Sukan Rakyat – Membara’.

Hence, the programme should be encouraged as it instills healthy values among the people, he stressed.

Through such sociable activity, he added, the young were brought out into the open to mix with each other but not huddled over tablets and smartphones.

Besides making new acquaintances, they are also exposed to fun-filled activities, he noted.

The programme was jointly organised by Special Affairs Department (Jasa) Sibu and Kampung Hilir KRT.

Dr Annuar said the programme enabled KRT members to mingle, thus strengthening cooperation among them.

The programme began with a mass aerobics, followed by telematch.

Some 30 children took part in the colouring contest.

The programme culminated with the hand over of prizes to the winners of the telematch.

Jasa officer for Sibu/Mukah division Awang Julaihi Awang Ali Borhan, who is also Kampung Hilir KRT chairman, was among those present.
