KUCHING: A local man was detained yesterday on suspicion of being involved in diesel-smuggling activities after he attempted to fill up at a petrol station with a modified pickup truck.

Acting on information received, a team from Central Police Station monitored a petrol station at Tabuan Road and detained a 30-year-old man from Jalan Datuk Amar Stephen Yong, who showed up around 11.30am in a Toyota Hilux.

A subsequent inspection of the vehicle’s bucket, which was covered with tarpaulin, revealed a modified tank fitted with a pump system and connected to the pickup’s fuel tank.

Both the suspect and his vehicle were then handed over to the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism for further action.

In an unrelated incident, a motorcyclist suffered broken limbs during a collision with a car along Jalan Sultan Tengah yesterday afternoon.

The 21-year-old, who was travelling with a 43-year-old friend, was said to be beating the red light at a traffic light intersection when he crashed into a car around 1pm.

He ended up fracturing his left arm and left leg, and was taken to the Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.

His friend and the car driver were unhurt in the accident.
