MIRI: As the Hari Raya festivity gets nearer, Muslims are not only busy preparing food and decorating their houses but are also forking out extra money for safety by installing  grilles in their homes.

Welder Wee Beng revealed that a month prior to the Ramadan month, he had already received orders for window and door grilles, which was 10 per cent more than ordinary months.

“Usually when my clients come to me for reservation for new grille, we would consult them on the measurement. Besides giving a new look to their house, many came because of fear of burglary and house breaking,” he told The Borneo Post, saying he also saw increase in orders months before other festivals like Chinese New Year and Gawai.

“Most of my clients reside in Tudan, Permyjaya and Senadin. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but this might be because security in the northern part of Miri is not very good.

“Keeping money at home, usually bonus for the festivity is one of the reasons that have attracted the criminals,” he opined.

Despite the windfall that these orders bring, Wee, who welds stainless steel window and door grilles, advised the public to take early precautions.

“Many only resorted to installing grilles after something had happened. As the grilles are not cheap and take at least a month to complete depending on the size, they must plan for their own as well as their family’s security.”

He pointed out that metal and aluminium are not ideal materials for grilles.

“Compared to stainless steel, metal and aluminium are more fragile and break easily,” he said.
