KOTA KINABALU: Former student of Tshung Tsin Secondary School, James Liew, who obtained 4A’s in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), has received an offer from Cambridge University upon completing his A-Levels in Cardiff Sixth Form College (CSFC).

CSFC executive director, Yasmin Sarwar, said James is only one of many Sabahans who are doing excellently at the college in the United Kingdom.

“Our Sabahan students for the last two years have done wonders,” said Yasmin, who attributed the achievement to a good educational foundation in the state.

“We are selective to begin with. They obviously come from a very good educational system in Sabah, because without the foundation they had in Sabah, we woulnd’t have been able to refine them into the young men and women who are going to go into these top universities.

“So, we’re very pleased to know that there are some fantastic schools here in Sabah that are doing a great job with these kids, because they’re giving us the product and we just have to polish,” said Yasmin when met at the college seminar at Magellan Sutera here on Monday.

Another student, Clifford Yin Shen Sia from Sabah, was recently awarded the top prize in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and will be invited to receive the prestigious Roentgenium award at an awards ceremony in London. He was placed in the top one per cent in the competition which had 6,885 participants.

Yasmin and the Principal at CFSC, Dr Liam Hughes, were in Kota Kinabalu for the first time, to promote awareness on the opportunity to get into top universities in the United Kingdom such as Oxford and Cambridge.

Yasmin disclosed that CFSC had educated a total of 21 Malaysian students with outstanding results who have all gone on to top universities in the United Kingdom. There are currently 16 Malaysian students in their final year (A2) and 26 in their first year (AS) studying at CFSC.

Nine students either graduated or are currently studying at CSFC.

“Two Sabahan students graduated from CFSC, namely Janice Lim who is currently studying Dentistry at Leeds University, and Jia Rui Chow, currently studying Engineering at Cambridge University, while our current first year Sabahan students are doing fantastically well and had been offered places from various top univerisities in the UK,” said Yasmin.

The seminar was conducted to impart information, tips and pointers on how to apply to all these top universities.

“It also serves as a platform for gathering our students, alumni members and prospective students,” she added.
