KOTA KINABALU: A man was killed when his Perodua Myvi car crashed into a tree apparently after catching fire at Tuaran Road, near the Taman Kwan Loke junction and SMK Shan Tao yesterday.

The body of the victim, whose identity was not immediately known, was burnt beyond recognition in the 9.20pm incident.

According to an eyewitness, the front seat of the car was on fire before crashing into the tree while heading to the city from Likas.

It is believed that the victim had tried to put out the fire on a seat when the car smashed into the tree.

Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Senior Assistant Superintendent Mohd Affendy Ramin said a team of personnel put out the fire after arriving at the scene at 9.37pm.

“The charred remains of a man was found inside the vehicle and police were immediately notified of the discovery,” he said, adding that it took several minutes for the Fire and Rescue personnel to extricate the remains from the vehicle.

The remains were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem.
