Ninety-one licences revoked for direct sales offences

KUALA PILAH: The Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry has revoked 91 licences belonging to companies involved in multi-level marketing for offences under the Direct Sales and Anti-Pyramid Scheme from 2003 until July 1 this year.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said 335 cases with seized goods, worth RM7.99 million, were recorded from 2008 until July 1 this year.

“Among the offences commonly committed are changes to the licence information (name of company, business address, shareholders and others) without the ministry’s approval besides providing false, confusing and inaccurate information to the controller (during and after issuance of licences).” he told reporters at the break-of-fast function in Masjid Kariah Kampung Galau, Seri Menanti near here yesterday.

Hasan. who is also Kuala Pilah Member of Parliament, said direct sales business had become a popular marketing tool with many consumers currently inclined to purchasing products or services through this way.

Hasan said the country’s direct sales was expected to continue expanding with an contribution of RM54.5 billion to the economy under the 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015) from RM27.13 billion under the previous plan.

Based on the direct sales development plan (2013-2020), he said, the industry targeted RM12 billion this year, with annual sales growth of between six to 12 percent, to RM20 billion by 2020. — Bernama
