Woman denies stealing baby clothing

KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed woman claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday to a charge of stealing baby clothing worth RM422.50 from a supermarket.

Suriawati Ismail Chung, 26, who appeared before magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie, was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail of seven years and also liable to a fine upon conviction.

The unrepresented accused was alleged to have stolen the items from the supermarket at Wawasan Plaza here at 1.20pm on June 29.

The magistrate set July 18 for the case management and released the accused on RM1,000 bail with two local sureties pending disposal of the case.

In another case, Suhaimi Samula, 33, was jailed six months for stealing three wallets valued at RM100 from a kiosk boutique at Suria Sabah Shopping Mall on July 3.

In an unrelated case, the same court put off to July 17 the sentencing of jobless Safiudin Saripuddin, 18, for trespassing into a container.

The court adjourned the sentencing of the accused at the request of the prosecution as the accused’s social report from the Welfare Department was not ready.

The unrepresented accused, who is a youthful offender, pleaded guilty to breaking into the container at Taman Gudon Utara in Menggatal at 7.50am on July 3.

He was charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail of 14 years and also liable to a fine upon conviction.

Safiudin was granted RM1,000 bail with two local sureties pending disposal of the case.

Prosecuting officer Inspectors Syahrin Ali and Lim Swee Beng prosecuted.
