KOTA SAMARAHAN: Three female students, charged with assaulting a schoolmate, broke down in tears when they were sent to Sekolah Tunas Bakti (STB) for two years of rehabilitation yesterday.

Magistrate Sulhairil Sulaiman ordered their punishment to start with immediate effect from yesterday. The juveniles will serve out their punishment in Melaka, Terengganu and Miri.

While waiting to be transferred, all three will be placed at STB at Telaga Air here.

The first accused was found guilty of committing offences under Section 323 and Section 506 of the Penal Code.

Criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term of up to two years, or fine, or both.

The other two accused were charged under Section 323, where voluntarily causing hurt provides for imprisonment which may extend to one year, or fine of RM2,000, or both.

When judgment was read out, all three broke down in tears and apologised to the magistrate and their parents.

They declared they had repented and would not repeat their offence.

The girls, who were accompanied by their families, also pleaded to the magistrate to postpone their punishment until after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, but the plea was rejected.

The girls admitted to causing hurt to the victim on April 25 this year around 9.40am at the staircase of the school.

The facts of the case said on that day, the victim, who was also the complainant, was summoned by her schoolmates to go to level three of the school building located near a laboratory.

When she arrived, a group of students were waiting for her.

One of the girls then asked her why she (the victim) had lied to them. But before she could say a word, she said they started to kick and rain punches on her, resulting in bodily injuries.

One warned her not to tell anyone about the incident, saying if she did they would beat her again.

A total of 10 suspects were arrested the next day following a police report lodged by the victim.

Initial police investigation revealed that only the three students were involved in the assault.

The video that went viral on social media showed the girl being brutally beaten up by the suspects.

The video also showed a group of girls loitering near a staircase and one of them took a video of herself while calling herself ‘Pailang’ – a Hokkien word for ‘thug’.
