KUCHING: Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Sheda) agrees with Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem’s 999-year lease idea as reported in The Borneo Post on June 27.

In a recent press statement, Sheda expressed support for the idea which came after Adenan participated in a closed door dialogue session with a cross section of the Chinese community at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

It was reported that after the dialogue session, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, the Minister of Local Government and Community Development had informed the media that the chief minister
was aware that there were problems in the state where land in perpetuity (999 years) had been reduced to either 99 or 66-year leases.

Wong had also said the chief minister was mulling over maintaining the lease of land after conversion or sub-division and was furthermore of the opinion that ‘what is in perpetuity be given as perpetuity’.

The direction to maintain the lease of land after conversion or sub-division will no doubt come as a welcomed relief to many landowners and developers.

“Sheda agrees and supports our chief minister’s vision in adopting a more mature and equitable approach to landowners’ rights, in order to move forward and to work towards Sarawak being a developed state,” the statement said.
