Local gets 12 years for gang robbery

KOTA KINABALU: A local man, local George Chong was jailed for 12 years by the Sessions Court here yesterday for gang robbery.

Court judge Azreena Aziz convicted him under Section 395 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

The accused, who committed the offence with an accomplice who is still at large, was found guilty of robbing a local man of a car, RM500 in cash and a cellphone at a staircase of a billiard saloon in Penampang on August 31.

Apart from that, the accused, who was defended by counsel Rahimah Majid, was placed under police supervision for two years.

The prosecution had called seven witnesses against the accused and Chong, who had three previous convictions, was the sole defence witness.

In a separate case at the same court, a local private taxi driver will be tried on January 26–27 next year for allegedly earning a living from prostitution activity.

Jackson Pailan, 23, who appeared before Azreena yesterday, faces a jail term of up to 15 years, whipping and also liable to a fine if found guilty under Section 372B of the Penal Code.

The accused, who was represented by counsel Chong Kian Ming, allegedly committed the offence at a room of a hotel in Penampang at 10.30pm on July 4.

He was granted RM10,000 bail with two local sureties and also ordered to report once a month at the nearest police station, pending disposal of the case.

Deputy public prosecutors Aida Jaafar Mad Ariff and Effizah Ernie Idris prosecuted in both cases.
