China woman denies charge of cheating local woman

KOTA KINABALU: A female farmer from China has entered a plea of not guilty in the magistrates’ court here yesterday after being charged with cheating a woman.

Wang Bu Wu, 43, who was brought before deputy registrar of the High Court Ryan Sangirann Rayner Jr, presiding as a magistrate, was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

The indictment is punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than one year and not more than ten years and with whipping, and shall also be liable to fine, upon conviction.

The accused, defended by counsel Chin Teck Ming, was alleged to have deceived the 49-year-old woman into believing that she could help the woman get treatment from a shaman to rid off her bad omen by allegedly inducing the woman to give her RM9,000 of jewelleries valued at RM20,000 and a handful of rice.

Wang, abetted by two friends, who are still at large, was alleged to have committed the offence at a car park at Foo Sang in Luyang at 7.30 am on June 24.

The court set Aug 8 for the case management and released the accused on a bail of RM3,000 with two local sureties, pending disposal of the case.

In an unrelated case, a Filipino, Binggo Hassan, 31, was jailed seven months after he admitted to retaining stolen items comprising eight bottles of shampoo, three bottles of deodorant and three bottles of lotion at a temporary settlement scheme in Telipok at 1 am on July 11.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus convicted him under Section 411 of the Penal Code, which is punishable with imprisonment for a term of not less than six months and not more than five years, and shall also be liable to a fine, upon conviction.

The accused was also ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence for further action.
