Curtin Sarawak to hold first youth leadership conference

MIRI: Curtin University Sarawak (Curtin Sarawak) will organise its inaugural Borneo Youth Leadership Conference 2014 from Aug 4 to 8.

The Borneo Youth Leadership Conference 2014 scheduled for Aug 4-8.

Organised by the Student Council of Curtin Sarawak with support from the university’s Leadership and Entrepreneurship Centre (LEC), it will see participation of 50 delegates from Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh.

Student Council vice-president and organising chairperson Vinodh Menon, said the conference themed, ‘Creating Tomorrow’s Leaders’ is open to youths from institutions of higher learning worldwide.

It will feature four speakers, including Ahmad Zakie Ahmad Shariff, chief executive officer of the Federation of Investment Managers Malaysia, Zlwin Chew, renowned Malaysian magician and mentalist Simerjeet Singh, a prominent international motivational speaker and Zainah Anwar, writer and internationally acclaimed co-

founder and former executive director of Sisters in Islam (SIS Forum).

Vinodh said the conference aims to create leaders of tomorrow by motivating and inspiring the delegates through various activities such as leadership talks delivered by the keynote speakers and other distinguished individuals.

To further enhance the delegates’ learning experience, the LEC will jointly conduct workshops with the Singapore-Malaysia based company, People Performance, which had helped individuals achieve outstanding business results by developing a structured and systematic business approach.

Apart from the talks and workshops, there will be team-building activities at the Borneo Tropical Rainforest Resort near Miri.

Professor Jim Mienczakowski, pro vice-chancellor and chief executive of Curtin Sarawak, said the conference is a most commendable initiative to engage and motivate young people in the region to develop their communication, leadership and entrepreneurship skills, in addition to fostering international friendship and understanding.

He said it provides an excellent platform for the student council to network and share ideas with other students, besides the opportunity to develop critical organisational and soft skills that will benefit them in their future careers.

The Student Council is an organisation that focuses primarily on the development and enhancement of students’ clubs at Curtin Sarawak. Since its inception, the Student Council has carried out many events for the benefit of its student population.
